Privacy Policy for WriteCrisp

Effective date: June 10, 2026

1. Overview

WriteCrisp ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how the WriteCrisp Chrome extension handles your data.

2. Data Collection

  • Personal information. We do not collect any personally identifiable information (PII).
  • API keys. Your API keys (e.g., Claude, OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry) are stored locally on your device using chrome.storage.local. They are never sent to our servers — we do not operate any servers.
  • Writing content. The text you analyze is sent directly to the AI provider you configure. We do not intercept, store, or monitor your writing content. We have no infrastructure that sees it.

3. Data Usage

The extension uses the text you provide solely to perform the writing improvements you request — Grammar, Compress, Prompt Enhancement, Explain (in your chosen language), or your Custom mode. This data is transmitted via HTTPS to the AI provider you configured.

4. Browser Permissions We Request

WriteCrisp requests the minimum set of Chrome permissions needed for its single purpose — AI-assisted writing improvement:

  • Access to websites (https://*/*). Needed for two reasons: the writing overlay must work in text fields on any HTTPS site you type on, and the extension must be able to reach the AI endpoint you configure — which cannot be known in advance. The extension contacts only that one endpoint; there is no other network traffic.
  • Localhost access (http://localhost, http://127.0.0.1). Lets you connect WriteCrisp to AI engines running on your own machine (Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM). Plain HTTP is permitted only for localhost; every remote endpoint must use HTTPS.
  • Storage. Saves your settings (provider, API key, model, shortcuts, theme) locally on your device via chrome.storage.local.
  • Clipboard write. Used only when you click the "Copy" button on an explanation result. The clipboard is never written without your explicit click.

5. Third-Party Services

WriteCrisp interacts with the third-party AI provider you choose. Please review the privacy policies of your configured providers (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft Azure) to understand how they handle your data.

6. Data Retention and Deletion

Because we operate no servers, we retain nothing. All extension data (settings, API keys, cached model lists) lives exclusively in your browser's local extension storage. You can delete it at any time by removing your keys in the extension's settings or by uninstalling the extension, which erases all stored data immediately and completely.

7. Chrome Web Store User Data Policy

WriteCrisp's use of information received from Google APIs and your browser adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We do not sell or transfer user data to third parties, use it for purposes unrelated to the extension's single purpose, or use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.

8. Security

  • All communications between the extension and your AI provider are encrypted via HTTPS (unencrypted HTTP is strictly permitted only for localhost/127.0.0.1 to facilitate offline engines).
  • Your credentials remain on your machine in chrome.storage.local.
  • To report a security concern, contact us at support@writecrisp.com — we appreciate responsible disclosure.

9. Children's Privacy

WriteCrisp is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone — including children.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the Effective date at the top of this document.
